A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following a fatal crash in east Essex.

Robert Barnard, a 59-year-old man from the Maldon area, was certified dead at the scene of a collision involving a blue Ford Fiesta and a white lorry on Friday, September 9, 2011.

The crash happened on Maldon Road near Goldhanger just before 2pm.

The driver of the lorry, a 32-year-old man from Upton Park in east London, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and later released on police bail until Wednesday, December 7 pending further enquiries.

A section of the road was closed for around six hours while forensic collision investigators carried out their enquiries and oil and debris were cleared from the road.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the collision. Anyone who saw the crash is urged to contact investigating officers at Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0300 333 4444 or 101.
